Five Gables Cottage is an ideal place to stay for a touring holiday being 15 minutes from Durham City, Durham University and the World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle. The cottage is also 1 hrs from York, 1 hrs from the Lake District and the Scottish Borders and less than 3 hrs from Edinburgh. This delightful self-catering cottage is rated 4 stars by the English Tourist Board.

There is so much to see and do in this lovely part of England: the cottage is close to: Binchester Roman Fort, Escomb Saxon Church, Auckland Castle, Whitworth Hall Country Park, the Wear Valley Walk and a National By-way Cycle Path; and a short drive from: Durham University Botanic Gardens, Crook Hall Gardens, Hardwick Country Park at Sedgefield, Sedgefield Racecourse, the historic market town of Barnard Castle, Raby Castle, Brancepeth Castle, Witton Castle, Lumley Castle and Locomotion ( National Railway Museum) at Shildon. Stan Laurel (of Laurel & Hardy fame) was baptised, attended school and lived in Bishop Auckland, and The Laurel and Hardy Appreciation Society holds meetings in the Laurel Room of Bishop Auckland Town Hall.

There are numerous museums to visit: Naval Heritage at Hartlepool Historic Quay & Museum, Industrial Heritage at Beamish, The North of England Open Air Museum and Killhope, The North of England Lead Mining Museum. Railway Heritage abounds: from the Tanfield Railway and Causey Arch, Weardale Railway, Locomotion, to Darlington Railway Centre & Museum.

Durham Cathedral is a must see if you are staying in this English country cottage and Egglestone Abbey and Finchale Priory are well worth a visit. There are golf courses at Bishop Auckland, Crook, Aycliffe & Durham and horse-riding and fishing nearby. This is a lovely part of England for walking too - Hamsterley Forest, Low Barns Nature Reserve, & the Durham Dales are all within a short drive, with High Force & Cauldron Snout waterfalls a little further.

This Victorian miner's cottage with country views was built circa 1860 and is now a delightful holiday cottage to rent. Well equipped, clean & comfortable, it has been completely re-furbished with facilities and equipment for five guests to sleep in two bedrooms. There is an enclosed lawn, gardens and parking to the front and side.

Binchester is a small village 3 miles north-east of Bishop Auckland and 9 miles south-west of Durham City. A public footpath opposite the cottage leads to fields, woods and the Auckland Walk for those wishing to exercise themselves or dogs. The gardens & rear patio are fully enclosed & gated The house is fully double glazed, has good loft insulation and is carpeted throughout. Central heating is gas-fired and the lounge is equipped with a gas fire. All rooms have been furnished to provide comfort for guests. The two bedrooms and bathroom are situated on the first floor. The kitchen/diner and lounge are situated on the ground floor The front entrance is via a double glazed porch.

The main bedroom has one double bed and one single bed, the smaller bedroom has two single beds. All linen, bedding, towels, etc., and gas/electricity are provided in the hire costs. The kitchen/diner is fully equipped and has access to the patio area and rear entrance.
