The coastline of Suffolk stretches for 45 miles, and this an almost unbroken line of sandy beaches and dunes, designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just outside the town of Woodbridge is the archaeological site of Sutton Hoo where in 1939 an Anglo-Saxon ship was discovered on a dig on a group of burial mounds. Also found was a large number of Saxon artifacts and so all together this amounts to one of the most important finds in British history. A new exhibition hall was opened in 2002, and this displays full reconstructions of the burial chamber of King Raedwald and the Sutton Hoo ship. Woodbridge is a great centre for a self-catering holiday in Suffolk and there is lots to see and visit in this pretty part of the county.
Along the coast at Aldeburgh is the site of East Anglia's foremost music festival, which tales place in June. The composer Benjamin Britten lived in the town and founded the festival, which now attracts thousands of visitors every year. There are some idyllic cottages to rent in Aldeburgh and it is a popular place for a holiday. Originally a medieval fishing port, Aldeburgh has a lovely Georgian high street, a daily fish market and beautiful sand and shingle beach. But all is not well for this small Suffolk town as the sea is encroaching and the 16th century Moot Hall, once in the centre, is now on the shore, so a visit to this most charming of places is a must before it disappears under the waves.
