This cosy, warm, attractive, semi-detached holiday cottage is situated on the owners’ grounds and boasts great quality accommodation in a super location. Absolutely perfect for guests wanting to enjoy a quiet romantic break, Stonechester Cottage is an ideal location at any time of year. A brilliant choice for walkers and cyclists, there are many walks across the countryside right through the heart of County Durham. Guests will be able to take a stroll along to Witton Castle, 4 miles, Witton-le-Wear, also 4 miles, Escomb, 5 miles, for its famous Anglo Saxon church, and nearby Hamsterley, 2 miles, for a stop off at the village pub.

The very popular destination of Hamsterley Forest is only a short drive away, and offers over 2000 hectares of beautiful countryside.

Guests can explore the area, watch the wildlife, take a walk along one of the many routes, which include The Gruffalo Trail for children, or cycle along one of the many bike trails which are all of varying degrees of difficulty. It is perfect for a picnic too when the sun is shining! Guests who want to enjoy riding along miles of way marked horse riding routes at Hamsterley Forest, or through the countryside of County Durham, have the opportunity to use the stabling facilities and up to 3 acres of grounds at Stonechester Cottage, by prior arrangement with the owners’. For fishing enthusiasts, there are over 8 acres of fishing lakes at Witton Lakes, which are just over 4 miles away.

Only a little over 6 miles away from Bishop Auckland, guests must take the opportunity to watch the incredibly popular Kynren Spectacular that is performed there from Jul-Sep every year.

Barnard Castle, the Bowes Museum and Raby Castle can all be reached within an easy 30-minute drive, as well as the historic, cathedral city of Durham, which has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status and has a thriving atmosphere all year round. Younger children and train enthusiasts will enjoy taking a trip to the National Railway Museum in Shildon, which is only 15 minutes’ drive away, or take a ride on the ’Train to Christmas Town’, which runs through nearby Weardale and leaves from Stanhope Station only 25 minutes away. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
