Wagtail Cottage is a traditional, stone-built cottage dating back to 1870, and is situated in the wonderful rambling countryside of County Durham, less than 2 miles away from Raby Castle. Cosy and dog friendly, Wagtail Cottage sits in the rural hamlet of Esperley, just 3 miles away from the pretty village of Staindrop. The perfect retreat for guests wanting to explore the local area by foot or by bicycle, there are plenty of footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways nearby that lead through breathtaking countryside and natural woodland. The nearby surrounding area is ideal for exploring and visiting local attractions and historical buildings, including the impressive Raby Castle, the ruins of Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum and Egglestone Hall with its attractive walled gardens. More energetic guests can enjoy a stroll along the River Tees and follow the Teesdale Way up the valley.
A few miles drive will bring guests to the popular market town of Barnard Castle, which boasts a great selection of tea rooms and antique shops that line the cobbled streets. This chocolate box perfect market town was named one of the Sunday Times’s Best Places to Live in the UK 2021. The cottage is located in close proximity to vibrant cities like York and Newcastle and also has some of the best countryside in the UK with the Durham Dales, including the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, North Yorkshire and Yorkshire Dales right on the doorstep and the Lake District only a stone’s throw away. The spectacular set of falls, including High Force, Low Force and Cauldron Snout, lie further up the valley and are well worth a visit along with a stop off at the charming village of Middleton-in-Teesdale.

On the first floor there is a shower room as well as a well-presented double bedroom and a single bedroom, each boasting views across the open countryside. The cottage benefits from a lovely enclosed garden that adjoins open countryside, making it an ideal place to arrive back to following a day of rambling or sightseeing.
