Extra Amenities

This pretty stone cottage, built in the 1800s, is set in the small village of Fourstones and situated on the old Roman stone road ‘The Stanegate’, just on the edge of the Northumberland National Park in Hadrian’s Wall Country. The cottage has been refurbished in 2018 to a very good standard and has a lovely cosy wood burner, which is perfect for the cooler evenings. It has been awarded ‘Dark Sky Friendly’ status from Visit Northumberland, and the owners have even provided a beginner’s stargazing kit! The village store and a dog-friendly village pub, which serves great food, are under a mile away.

Northumberland has been voted the best county for holidays in 2018 by the British Tourism Awards and has something for everyone.
The location here at Stanegate Cottage is ideal for reaching all parts of the county. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall is on the doorstep, and the Hadrian’s Cycleway passes the front door. Cyclists, walkers and family dogs are very welcome. Stanegate Cottage is perfect for couples, four adults or a family, having two good-sized bedrooms and a lovely family bathroom. Hexham is only 4 miles away for a visit to the abbey, the old Saxon crypt, golf course or the old gaol museum.

If you prefer shopping, you might enjoy the Tuesday market, which is set up on The Shambles, and you can drop into one of the many antique and curio shops. The cottage is also very well located for day trips to Beamish Museum, Kielder Water and Forest, Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne. Don’t forget to take a trip to the Heritage Coastline Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its miles of golden beaches, or visit Alnwick and Bamburgh Castles for some history. There is salmon fishing on the South Tyne River ¼ mile away. Shop 500 yards, pub/restaurant 1 mile
