Only a little over a mile away, the village of Allendale is often referred to as Allendale Town on maps and literature, and has a thriving community.
Twice crowned ’Village of the Year’ and home to The Museum of Classic Sci-Fi, this pretty, stone-built village in the heart of the Allen Valleys may be small in size, but it is big in personality. With three pubs and a shop in the centre, guests will find this a great place to visit and enjoy the local food, drink and produce. Try a pint of Allendale real ale from the town’s own brewery, or tuck into generous sandwiches and homemade pies at the butchers.
Ideal for guests who enjoy a walking, cycling or rambling holiday, there are numerous popular walks and established public footpaths leading right from the grounds and onwards towards destinations including Allendale Common, Allenheads Moor and Allendale village itself. For guests wanting to enjoy a scenic walk, head out around the River East Allen on routes taking in moorland, waterfalls and wildlife. See too, the remains of Allendale’s industrial heritage of lead and silver extraction. More serious walkers will find that The Barn is the perfect base for taking part in in the annual Allendale Challenge, which is a 25-mile endurance circuit around the valley.
Also a great base for walkers and cyclists wanting to enjoy the sights and history of Hadrian’s Wall, there are numerous archaeological sites, Roman forts and places of interest to visit along the way.
For a more leisurely day trip, visit the quaint village of Wylam, which is the birthplace of George Stephenson, the pioneering railway engineer. The towns and villages of Hexham, Corbridge, Haltwhistle and Bardon Mill are all within an easy 30-minute drive and offer attractions and sights for guests of all ages. The North Pennines Observatory for stargazing at the Old School House in Allenheads is only 8 miles away. Hexham Abbey and Hexham Old Gaol are both popular destinations at any time of year. A little further afield, but still within an hour’s drive, guests will be able to take a trip to the Northumberland coast, Newcastle upon Tyne, The Metrocentre in Gateshead, Killhope, the cathedral city of Durham and Beamish Living Museum.
