Set in this peaceful Lakeland village, The Mount is quintessential Edwardian, with charm, inspiration, and as the owners put it, ‘soul’. Typical of the Arts and Crafts period in which it was built, the property is full of character. The stunning tiled entrance porch is the perfect place for muddy boots, while the living room is warm with a welcoming open fire and high ceiling. If you can pull yourself away from the breathtaking views from the bay window, there is a large dining room with a dining table to seat 10, great for a family get together.
Whilst you savour a hearty meal, take time to relish the artwork and eclectic artefacts that the owners have collected over time. Upstairs over two floors are five exceptional bedrooms offering superior comfort, each with an en-suite shower or bathroom, sumptuous beds, perfect for a good night’s sleep, and all with amazing lake or mountain views.
Portinscale is home to many of Wainwright’s walks, including the famous Catbells and this is the perfect base to leave the car and get out on foot.
Alternatively you have one of Portinscale’s renowned tea rooms just a few strides away, with tasty home cooked food. The nearby Derwent Marina offers various watersports, or catch one of the launches to explore the lake and surrounding beauty. Keswick is a short walk away where you can find an abundance of cafés, shops and museums, as well as its own theatre and cinema. Should you bring your bikes, there is no shortage of routes to try, or for the more adventurous, nearby Whinlatter Forest is home to some of the country’s best mountain bike routes.
