Violet in the Vines is a compact and quirky shepherd’s hut based just a 5-minute drive from Sandown’s beach and located in one of the oldest working vineyards in the UK (officially within one of the sunniest areas of the UK), with beautiful sea views and a fantastically unique interior. Violet stands at the top of the vineyard, away from everybody, and offers you a holiday of perfect tranquil seclusion; until you walk 5 minutes back down the hill to the farm shop that is.
Although you will be secluded, Violet in the Vines understands the need of modern life, so yes, you can still charge your phone and keep your wine cold. Parking is 330 yards away at the farmhouse, so your holiday will begin with a short uphill walk. The hut offers you a cosy open-plan space with a 4ft 6in double raised bed, and plenty of underbed and drawer storage. There are two comfortable tub chairs, a pot belly wood burner, cold running water and basin, a portable bluetooth speaker and a Dutch barn front door. Adjacent to the hut is your own private wet room and toilet facility, crafted in a quirky rustic style from aged vineyard posts and weathered corrugated tin. The wetroom facilities include 12v lighting, a chemical toilet, hot shower (glamping style), mirror and a basin with a cold tap. In true glamping style, cooking is all outside in a covered barbecue pod, with a gas barbecue, twin gas rings, a butane operated outdoor fridge, a work top and utensils.
The shepherd’s hut is set within 10 acres at Adgestone Vineyard, approximately 1½ miles away from the beach at Sandown and on the official 66 mile ’round the Island’ cycle route. The vineyard is set on a south facing slope, nestled beneath Brading Down. Evidence shows that the original vines were planted by the Romans over 2000 years ago. The vineyard’s award-winning wine was chosen in 1994 to accompany the dinner for the Queen’s celebration of the anniversary of the D-Day Landings. Please note, the vineyard is open to the public between the hours of 10am and 5pm. After 5pm you can enjoy the tranquillity of 10 acres of vines sat beneath a blanket of stars, with the only likely visitors being rabbits or Beau the little farm dog saying hello.
A welcome pack is provided upon your arrival which includes two bottles of Adgestone wine and the essentials such as tea, coffee, sugar and milk to get you started. The owners are also happy to gift guests a 90 minute vineyard tour and personal wine tasting session. Wander through the vineyard, guided by digital audio technology, ending up in the subterranean cellars. The tour concludes with a 30 minute personal wine tasting session. The vineyard café is open seven days a week (10am to 4pm) during the high season.
Off season the café is open Tuesday to Sunday between 10am and 4pm. The vineyard (including the café) is closed to tourists during January and February. The café serves cold fresh platters and antipasti, as well as wine and local ale. Live acoustic music plays in the vineyard every weekend during high season (1pm to 3pm).
The rural hamlet of Adgestone is surrounded by three nature reserves where you can see wildfowl, buzzards, woodpeckers, herons and red squirrels. Around Brading there are 70 footpaths taking in the beauty of the marshlands and its amazing bird life, stretching to the Downs, which lie within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. But you will not have to go far to appreciate the appreciate the wildlife, the vineyard has four pygmy goats in residence and a vast array of free ranging chickens.
