Extra Amenities

A stylish, contemporary terraced cottage set over three floors, there is an en-suite master bedroom, a comfortable living room, separate dining room and wonderful bar/games room in the basement, complete with an Xbox One. There is even a place to store bikes if you plan on re-enacting the Tour De Yorkshire route, or fancy mountain biking on some of the popular routes nearby.

Kirkgate sits a short walk from the popular market town of Thirsk, which is blessed with bistros and tearooms, traditional pubs and wine bars, as well as a regular market. Thirsk has a charm of its own with its old buildings, yet it centres around a bustling cobbled market square, dominated by the town clock, with its Monday and Saturday markets and independent shopping. Perfect for enjoying many easy going walks through the town and along the river, and is also an ideal base to explore surrounding traditional Yorkshire villages. There are plenty more strenuous walks in the area, such as on the Hambleton Hills and the moorland tracks such as The Drove Road.

The Swale Way long distance path passes through Thirsk, connecting Boroughbridge and Kirby Stephen.

There is plenty to do in and around Thirsk, with regular race meetings, golf courses and mile upon mile of countryside to explore. Head out and about and discover the Cleveland Way, where you can follow the path towards Whitestone Cliff for fantastic views of Lake Gormire, and across the Vale of Mowbray to the Pennines, just visible in the distance. The mysterious Lake Gormire is tucked away in dense woodland below Sutton Bank, and is one of only two natural lakes in the county, created by meltwater at the end of the last Ice Age and accessible only on foot. No water can be seen flowing either into or out of it, keeping it at a steady level. The theory is that it’s fed by an underground spring and drained through a channel in the limestone below.

The myth is that there is a hidden city at the bottom. The author James Herriot has a strong influence in the area, and the World Of James Herriot is right on your doorstep.

There are several ancient abbeys and castles each with their own unique qualities. Just a short drive away you can experience Rievaulx Abbey’s fascinating past and the lives of the monks who called it their home. As for day trips, there are too many to mention, but the medieval walled city of York, Ripon, the third smallest city in England, and many ancient abbeys are all worth exploring. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is just to the west, and the North York Moors just to the east, with the stunning Yorkshire coast just an hour away if a trip to the seaside takes your fancy. All in all, you will never get bored, and with everything you could need at Kirkgate, you will want to return time and again. Shop and restaurant 250 yards, pub 50 yard
