English country holiday cottages to rent

Self catering holiday cottages to rent near Folkestone

Folkestone has been asked a question that its elders have not yet decided whether it’s for better or for worse to answer it. No, it’s not a marriage proposal, but it’s regularly asked if it is the “New” Hastings! Naturally enough, this town is perhaps best known for being a seafaring town, having been a very important harbour and shipping port during the 19th and 20th centuries. However, the Channel Tunnel has since reduced the harbour’s activity, although it remains in use with more of a leisure leaning. The oldest Battle of Britain Museum, the Kent, is located nearby.

It’s a superb destination for those taking a self catering holiday cottage in the area. There’s plenty to see and do, and part of the town is included in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Being at the foot of the North Downs, walkers (with or without dogs), cyclists and bird-watchers will be in their element, and two of the regions manor long-distance footpaths – the North Downs Way and the Saxon Shore Way, pass through the town.

Also popular are the villages and towns of Hythe near Romney, Dungeness, Hawkinge and Ottinge, Canterbury lastminute availability can be scarce in the summer holiday months for large holiday houses and smaller cottages.

Things to do when visiting Folkestone

It also has an association with some famous folk, including William Harvey (he discovered the circulation of blood) and Samuel Plimsoll (he of the eponymous ship depth measurement line) and actor David Tomlinson and June Brown. There is also some great shopping in both the Bouverie Place shopping centre as well as along the High and surrounding streets where you can discover a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars to refuel in.
