Escape to the Wye Valley and the graceful and tranquil ambience of Grosvenor Cottage on the Georgian country estate of Wharton Lodge, near Ross-on-Wye. One of three 5 star self-catering cottages and apartments set in 14 acres of parkland, this Herefordshire holiday home is a superb base for exploring many of the most beautiful parts of England and Wales. The Wye Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty, immortalised by the Romantic Poets. The landscape around this lovely cottage is dotted with many dramatic castles - Eastnor, Chepstow and the distinctive red sandstone of Goodrich Castle that stands high on a rocky stack with amazing views above the River Wye. The Malvern Hills and Elgar Trail are close by and the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Cotswolds are within easy reach.
The cottage is well-positioned for the Royal Forest of Dean famed for beautiful scenic walks and Ross-on-Wye, with its pretty timber-framed houses and good pubs and restaurants, is just 3 miles away.
There are abundant opportunities for canoeing, abseiling or rock climbing in and around the 100 miles of river in the area. At Symonds Yat you can paddle through a dramatic gorge carved by the current and enjoy lovely cycle routes through the forest and riverside or on the virtually traffic free roads. Go Ape, the high-wire adventure park in the trees, makes a fantastic day out - if you have a head for heights!
A superb UK touring base, the cottage is a short drive to the cathedral cities of Worcester, Hereford (home of the Mappa Mundi), Gloucester and the Spa town of Cheltenham.
With London just 2.5 hours away at the end of the M50, Grosvenor cottage is a convenient destination for a romantic weekend break or for an anniversary in 5 star luxury. Grosvenor Cottage is a comfortable, superbly equipped 5 Star cottage (with the Gold Award too) that sleeps 3 in 2 bedrooms. Elegantly furnished and situated in a charming Georgian country house on 14 acres of parkland, this is one of three cottages and one apartment on the estate. Just 3 miles from the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye and set in a private, walled courtyard garden, this pet-friendly cottage is the place for a truly relaxing and memorable holiday.
The fully fitted kitchen is equipped with an electric oven and hob with extractor, microwave, dishwasher and fridge-freezer. There is a shared laundry room and a 48-hour laundry service. Off the kitchen a separate dining area with table and chairs leads to the welcoming sitting room - tastefully furnished with antique and reproduction furniture. The original pine fire surround encompasses a wood-burner effect fire. And comfortable sofas provide the perfect place to curl up and take in the gorgeous views over parkland and the valley beyond. Grosvenor Cottage is well-equipped with flat screen TV, DVD player and CD player, making it an ideal place to chill-out!
The very large master bedroom has a queen-sized bed and extensive seating area with commanding views of the parkland. The smaller single bedroom sleeps one child or adult. The separate bathroom with bath has stunning views over the Italianate garden - best enjoyed during a long soak after a day of activity! The bathroom is equipped with standalone shower, wash-hand basin and toilet, as well as a hairdryer and shaver point.
Outside the cottage is the pretty, walled courtyard garden with table and chairs - ideal for al fresco dining, and exclusively for the use of cottage guests. The beautiful Italianate garden and greenhouse - distinctive features of Wharton Lodge - are for the enjoyment of all the cottages and apartment guests.

Many small extras have been thoughtfully provided with this Herefordshire holiday cottage to make your stay enjoyable: fresh flowers, quality bedlinen, towels, bathrobes and White Company toiletries are included free of charge. A welcome basket of provisions and a bottle of wine is arranged for your arrival. Heating and electricity are included in the rental.
Directions
Grosvenor Cottage is situated just 3 miles from Ross-on-Wye on the A40 (Ross-on-Wye/Gloucester Road) between the villages of Lea and Ryeford. Wharton Lodge is well signposted and is on the left if you are coming from Ross, and on the right from Gloucester. Please take the entrance marked 'To the Cottages' and not the main drive. Enter via the electric gates and drive up to the rear of the main house. Designated parking is next to the green timber garage.
Change over day is flexible. New arrivals are welcome from 3.30pm. Guests must vacate the property by 10.30am. Short breaks of 3 nights are available at 50% of the weekly rate.
