Bridge over river Severn Shrewsbury

Holiday cottages in Shropshire

Halfway along the English and Welsh border or Marches, Shropshire is a beautiful county with outstanding countryside. The River Severn meanders through from the Welsh mountains down to the flatter lands where it creates some excellent ox bow lakes. To the western side of Shropshire lies the hills around Carding Mill valley, nestling upon the village of Church Stretton, known locally as little Switzerland. The Long Mynd is a popular Gliding centre as well as a walking and cycling centre. Further South towards Clun, the county really is rural and you can really feel far from it all.

There are some really picturesque villages and towns with lovely houses, cottages, churches and of course pubs! The main county town is Shrewsbury - a medieval town full of historic buildings, surrounded by the Severn. Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock (home of the modern Olympics) Wem, Oswestry and Ellesmere are other towns worthy of a visit - see the self-catering cottages below.
