The area is famed for gourmet foods, local crafts and international festivals. The rivers of the Wye and Usk snake through the valley, through the fine market towns of Monmouth, Chepstow, Abergavenny and Newport and across beautiful surrounding landscapes. For a cycling holiday, there is a superb selection of cycle routes with forest and riverside cycle ways and there are many water-based activities within easy reach of your cottage. At one of the prettiest parts of the River Wye at Symonds Yat, you can hire a canoe, some of which can accommodate up to 4 persons (typically 2 adults and 2 children or 3 adults) and paddle through the dramatic gorge carved through the land by the current. If you'd rather someone else do the work(!) a boat cruise along the Wye takes you through a beautiful area rich with wildlife - you may spot the rare peregrine falcon. It is an popular with walkers and with many local pubs and restaurants along the banks offering cream teas and pub lunches it's easy to stop and reward yourself for all the exertion! Anglers will enjoy the amazing salmon fishing and the Wye Valley is traversed by many bridleways and stone tracks through woodland making it perfect for horseriding.
There are many historic sites – the red sandstone Goodrich Castle is one of the most distinctive ruins in the area, perched high above the River Wye on a craggy crop surrounded by an empty moat, with tremendous views from its towers across the Wye Valley. The cottage is perfectly placed for Offa's Dyke, and is the ideal gateway into the Forest of Dean. The cities of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester and the Spa town of Cheltenham are an easy drive, as are Chepstow and Hereford for a day at the races. Ross-on-Wye is conveniently situated at the end of the M50, surprisingly close to London, (approx 2.5 hours). Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff are all approx 1 hour. This self-catering, pet friendly cottage is lovely for a short break or longer holiday
Although situated in the heart of town, India Cottage is privately located in an historic cobbled courtyard next to China cottage. Its south-facing roof terrace enjoys lovely views towards John Kyrle's Summer House and the spire of the 14th Century St Mary's Church. The 4-star cottage has spacious accommodation arranged on 3 floors, with living space on the first floor. Housed in a former teashop, (hence the name) it was completely refurbished in 2002 in a superb style that blend the teashop's old oak beams with contemporary fittings and décor. The accommodation sleeps 4 - India Cottage is suitable for a couple and 2 children (aged 10 or above), teenagers or active adults. As there is a bedroom accessed by steep ladder steps, it is not suitable for younger children. The sister property, China Cottage, is new to let in 2009 and is refurbished to the same high standard. China Cottage sleeps 3, with the same steep ladder steps in the galleried bedroom making it unsuitable for children younger than 10.
