Feel at home at Bluebell Cottage, the former residence of a local artist. A stone built semi-detached Lakeland villa on a tranquil lane a few minutes traffic-free walk from the plentiful amenities of Grasmere village centre, Bluebell is comfortably furnished to evoke its period origins and retains original features including a large porch and light-filled spacious hall.
Sitting in the bay window to take in the view, gazing into the fire in the wood-burning stove, cooking and eating in the well equipped kitchen, or dining in the elegant beamed dining room, Bluebell Cottage accommodates six in comfort, with fell views from every room. The master bedroom, with its super kingsize bed, and twin bedroom, with 3ft single beds, both have an en-suite shower room, while the prettily decorated double bedroom has full height views through charming French windows to fells and a traditional hay meadow. The family bathroom encourages sinking into a hot bath, while the drying room turns wet outdoor gear warm and dry by morning.
The enclosed garden catches the sun at any time of the day, attracting occasional red squirrels or pre-dawn badgers passing through.
Younger children have a nearby local playground and up to two well-behaved dogs are warmly welcomed at no extra charge. Private parking is available for three cars, with lockable storage for bikes and kayaks.
Bluebell Cottage is on a quiet lane in Grasmere’s tranquil Easedale Valley, yet a level stroll along a gravel footpath brings you in minutes to shops, pharmacy, newsagent and toy shop, a post office and the village centre with its cafés, pubs and varied restaurants. Day passes for swimming and spa facilities are available on sale from several Grasmere hotels.
The archetypal Lake District village, Grasmere attractions include ‘Sam Read’ book shop, delicious Gingerbread, art galleries, exhibitions and craft fairs, as well as souvenir and outdoor shops. The daffodil garden, near the ancient church, celebrates William Wordsworth, one of Britain’s favourite poets. Live music and sport TV are available at one of the bars in the village, and Grasmere Players theatricals, church concerts and poetry events offer periodical evening entertainment.
Forgetting your car is easy. Fabulous walks set off from the front door in every direction to suit all ages and abilities; Easedale Tarn via dramatic waterfalls of Sourmilk Gill, the ‘Lion and Lamb’ on Helm Crag (the only ‘Wainwright Peak’ never climbed by Alfred Wainwright) or a gentle amble round Grasmere and Rydal Water, stopping en-route at the micro-brewery.
For hardier walkers, some of England’s highest peaks are achievable. Peaceful Bluebell Cottage is in the centre of the Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet convenient for the arterial highway to nearby Ambleside, with cinema, climbing wall, garden world, delicatessen and museum, Keswick with a market, theatre, lake and large supermarket, and Bowness-on-Windermere with Beatrix Potter Experience, National Park Visitor Centre and boat trips. Some destinations are also serviced by frequent open-top busses.
Peace and quiet or hustle and bustle. Rest and relaxation or adventure and challenge. Verdant spring colours, hazy summer days, fine autumn leaves or crisp winter days, Bluebell Cottage is ideal year round for friends and families looking for a picture perfect Lake District holiday. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile
