Extra Amenities
Shaw End Mansion was built in 1796 by the Shepherd family, who were wealthy mill owners and was designed by Francis Webster, responsible for many of Westmorland’s country houses. The house has been expertly converted into four spacious holiday apartments with high quality furnishings, tasteful décor throughout and each offers a truly memorable experience. The apartments offer luxurious self-catering accommodation just on the outskirts of Kendal, the gateway to The Lakes. This excellent location, unspoilt views to the farmland and the river make these apartments the perfect base for the Lake District Retreat. Guests have access to all of the 200 acre land including walks, woodland and nearby river and there is fishing on the river during the fishing season, the owners have rights for one rod as long as guests hold the relevant rod license. Part of the 200 acre site is a working farm where guests can request to visit/feed the lambs and are welcome to look around the farm in agreement with the owners. The grand entrance with sweeping staircase and pine clad hallway has many period features and has pictures and reminders of the history of the mansion on the walls.
This spacious 2 bedroom apartment, located on the first floor at the top of the sweeping staircase sleeps up to 6 guests. The master bedroom features a double bed with en-suite shower room, the second bedroom features another double bed whilst the third offers twin beds. The main bathroom features a bath, toilet and basin. The grand living room has high ceilings and huge windows which flood the room with plenty of natural daylight. The open-plan living/dining room provides plenty of easy seating, along with an open fire for cosy nights in after a day on the fells. This leads to the modern kitchen area, with all the facilities you could need including a dishwasher. There is a shared utility room on the ground floor with a washing machine and freezer. Each apartment is perfect for couples or families to relax and enjoy their holiday. The house can be set up to sleep 18 by booking all 4 apartments together and the entrance hall can be set up as a dining room, making it perfect for a family banquet or special occasion. Shaw End Mansion is only 11 miles from Windermere, 4 miles from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and 6 miles from the M6. Nearby Kendal is an attractive market town with excellent shopping facilities, a leisure centre, museums, art galleries, and many sites of historical interest.
The Lake District National Park offers walking, climbing, sailing and quad biking, as well as great local produce. Brockhole visitor centre offers activities from January and is great for young children. In Spring, enjoy Damson Day in the Lyth valley, the Keswick mountain festival and Holker garden festival. In summer, enjoy the Appleby horse fair, the Great North Swim on Windermere, the Cumbria Steam Gathering and Mintfest – an international festival of street arts. September brings the Westmorland County Show, the Kendal Torchlight Carnival, Cumbria Artists open studios and Borrowdale Shepherds’ meet and show.
