Close to many amenities, it is 2 miles to Brixham Harbour, about a 30-minute walk down hill. South Devon’s two cities are Exeter and Plymouth and are both within easy driving distance, 30 miles, and offer their own tourist attractions, historical buildings, and shops. Dartmoor is breathtakingly beautiful and at once romantic, mysterious, wild, eerie.
You can visit the tourist spots or, if you are an experienced walker and navigator, you can get away from the tourists and explore the depths of Dartmoor. You will see wild Dartmoor Ponies, cross ancient stone bridges spanning the clear bubbling waters of the River Dart and other rivers, and feel the somewhat eerie presence of the ‘Tors’ and it has seven rocky hills which preside majestically over the moors. Dartmouth is the neighbouring town to Brixham, which is situated on and across the mouth of the River Dart. Take the ferry across to Dartmouth, and whilst waiting at the jetty, look across to Dartmouth at the Britannia Royal Naval College which is located on a hill above the river, where it glints in the sunshine, and a splendid backdrop for the river estuary with its many sailing boats, naval boats and pleasure cruisers.
Look to the mouth of the river and you will see two castles, those of Kingswear and Dartmouth, true fairy-like castles guarding the mouth, with the rocky waters of the estuary lapping at their feet. Don’t forget to visit Agatha Christie’s home ‘Greenway’, which was for many years her summer residence, now opens to the public. There are also many National Trust properties all waiting to be explored. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mil
