Chalky Blue is less than 100 metres way from the local beaches, a bustling harbour and port which dates to the 12th century. It is lit with fairy lights and has a sandy beach too! It is surrounded by lots of cafés, Joey’s ice cream, fish and chips, pubs and restaurants (Ilfracombe can currently boast two Michelin star restaurants) to enjoy whilst watching the sailing, fishing and RNLI boats. There are independent craft shops and art galleries influenced by Damien Hirst’s ’Verity’ statue which is a must see. The Tunnels beaches are interesting with a large natural sea pool which is fabulous for open sea swimming surrounded by the glorious, rugged cliffs although sheltered for children with buckets and spades and jumping in the waves is also only a short walk away. In fact, it would be extremely easy to leave the car as there is a lot on offer at your doorstep. There is diving, and other water sport activities. There are boat trips to Lundy Island, sea cruises of the exhilarating North Devon coastline, deep sea fishing and sea life safaris to see seals, porpoises and various sea birds.
Walk the coast path from Capstone to Lee, Morthoe and Woolacombe. Lots of pubs along the way so you can get a bus on the return! There are several world class beaches such as Saunton sands, Woolacombe, Croyde and Westward Ho – all of which are famous for their surfing with vast stretches of golden sand and great dunes.
The surrounding area has many attractions waiting to be discovered such as Cairn Woodland Nature Reserve, Hillsborough and Rapperee Cove, The Torrs, Watermouth Bay and the South West Coast Path. Then there is the lovely Fuchsia Valley and for the family, Watermouth Castle and Theme Park. Ilfracombe is also perfectly situated to the enjoy the countless other North Devon attractions such as the popular Tarka Trail which provides the unique opportunity by bike to follow a disused railway line allowing you to enjoy some of Devon’s finest countryside and scenery stretching from Barnstaple through to Bideford and beyond. And then there’s Exmoor National Park, just 11 miles away, and Lynton and Lynmouth, 19 miles to the east with its incredible sea views, rugged cliffs and amazing funicular cliff railway which opened in 1890 and is the highest and steepest totally wat
