The town is almost surrounded by gardens and some of the most beautiful public ones you will ever see. From the perfect example of English, in the Valley Gardens, look up and you will see the huge glass-domed Sun Pavilion, and for the horticulturist, the Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens is a must and is the northern home of the R.H.S., and finally the West Park Stray, 200 acres of park and plants. So, having smelt the fragrant flowers, try some stinky water. The Victorians re-discovered the curative powers of sulphur springs, and so finding them at Harrogate they exploited them to the full by building a spa town. You can plunge into the waters, sweat in the steam rooms, be pummelled with a massage, or take various other therapies at the marvellously tiled, and mock Moorish, Turkish Baths in the Royal Baths Assembly Rooms. Just around the corner is the Royal Pump Room Museum, which was built over the springs and gives you some idea of how this phenomenon took off, and the rich and famous who took part in it. Don't drink it by the pint.
