Eight stone steps lead down from the pavement to the cottage entrance, where a bench surrounded by plant pots provides a lovely spot to sit with a morning coffee and watch the world go by. Step inside the vestibule, which offers space for coats and shoes, before continuing into the atmospheric living room. Original beams, a stone floor and a traditional saltbox carved into an alcove reflect the building’s fascinating past, while a restored display cabinet and handcrafted monk’s bench add to its unique character. Relax on the comfortable sofa and chairs, light the wood burner and choose a film from the collection of DVDs for a cosy evening together.
Double, glass-panelled doors separate the living area from the characterful kitchen. Bespoke units complement the cottage beautifully, while exposed brickwork frames the impressive double oven.

Gather around the dining table, with further monk’s bench seating, to enjoy home-cooked meals and plan the following day’s adventures.
A steep and uneven staircase leads to the first floor, where there are two welcoming double bedrooms. Both bedrooms have their own TV and en-suite shower room, offering privacy and convenience for couples or friends holidaying together. Outside, a useful outhouse houses a washing machine and freezer, particularly handy for longer stays.
Bagdale Cottage’s age and authenticity are central to its appeal, with low beams in the upstairs hallway and uneven steps adding to its historic charm. Guests should take care when moving around these areas.

Whitby’s harbour, beaches and many attractions are all within easy reach. Wander through cobbled streets and hidden yards, browse independent boutiques and traditional shops, or discover the town’s famous jet jewellery.
