A quirky ‘upside-down’ house with designated parking on a small, tranquil holiday development just outside Whitby. It is the perfect base for couples and families wanting to explore the North York Moors and the pretty seaside villages of the Yorkshire coast. Capstan Cottage has three bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor, whilst the upstairs living area has a small balcony which affords great views of the impressive viaduct built to carry the old railway line over the Esk. Sit with the balcony doors open and listen to the birds sing, and catch glimpses of the North York Moors steam train through the trees as it wends its way along the river bank on its way to Pickering through spectacular moorland scenery. Take a trip on the train and enjoy the market town of Pickering with its motte and bailey castle, or stop off in Goathland, better known by many as Aidensfield - the fictional village of the TV series ‘Heartbeat’ and familiar to many as ‘Hogsmeade’ station in the early Harry Potter films.
Within the well-kept grounds there is plenty of green space, two small playgrounds and picnic tables with gas barbecues provided during the summer months. Walking down through the complex towards the riverbank, you may be lucky enough to catch sight of heron fishing for salmon or even a cheeky seal. The cottage is some 200 yards from the ‘Cinder Track’, the old railway line running 20 miles between Whitby and Scarborough, which is used extensively by walkers and cyclists. A 20-minute walk across the viaduct with its views down the river will take you to the centre of Whitby, a charming fishing port at the mouth of the river Esk. Wander along its cobbled streets lined with welcoming tea rooms and a host of restaurants and quirky shops - or just enjoy the simple pleasure of eating fish and chips on the pier! Throughout the year Whitby plays host to many festivals, welcoming Goths and Steampunks, as well as hosting its own regatta; it even welcomes musicians from around the world to the fabulous Musicport Festival.
Walk in the steps of Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, as you climb up the 199 steps to the iconic ruin that is Whitby Abbey, and enjoy spectacular views across the town towards the moors and out to sea. The sandy beach to the west of the town, with its seafront promenade and colourful beach huts, stretches 2 miles to the pretty village of Sandsend. About 6 miles away is the thriving village of Robin Hoods Bay with its narrow streets full of smugglers’ tales and a beach perfect for rock pooling. Beach ¾ mile. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
Although these properties are approximately 25 yards apart, Capstan Cottage (ref UK2335) can be booked together with Keel Cottage (ref CC243095) to accommodate up to 12 guest
