There are a multitude of activities for children within easy reach of your holiday cottage. Alnwick Castle - the setting for Harry Potter's Hogwarts - is just down the road, and children will enjoy clambering around the world's biggest treehouse in the lovely surrounding gardens. Just over an hour away, Kielder Water and Forest Park with the largest man-made lake in northern Europe offers waterskiing, wind surfing, boat trips and cycling as well as star-gazing at the new Kielder Observatory. Northumberland is popular for walking holidays and Hadrian's Wall, the ancient frontier of the Roman Empire, provides gorgeous paths through the majestic wilds of Northumberland National Park. It is a fabulous spot for a family cycling holiday and children's bikes or tag-alongs can be rented near the cottage. For older kids and adults, exhilarating quad biking is also on offer in lovely farmland near the cottage.
More relaxing activities are on offer on your doorstep - Meg's Lake, just to the west of the cottage offers fly fishing, included in your rental, as well as a lovely place to picnic or barbecue.
The area has some of the country's best beaches, and it's perfect for an old-fashioned seaside holiday with miles of golden sand, uncrowded beaches and quaint fishing villages. Northumberland is home to some rare and lovely wildlife - the Farne Islands has one of Britain's most important seabird sanctuaries. And the area is known for its red squirrels, badgers, foxes and deer. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, walkable only twice a day at low tide, also provides an atmospheric day trip. Inland, around 30 minutes drive, the lively cities of Newcastle and Gateshead supply amazing architecture and cultural vibrancy. Beacon Hill Cottages are an ideal place for relaxing in peace and quiet or for energetic getaway.
All the rooms face south or south and west in this beautiful sunny cottage which was the original farmhouse. The sitting room has an open fire, with logs provided, a DVD player and CD radio. It opens out into an exceptionally large double-glazed garden room, 30 feet long, containing both comfortable seating and dining areas. This leads to a private lawned garden with stunning views to the south and the Northumberland coast, a lovely place to sit and catch your breath after that early morning workout! Like all of Beacon Hill holiday cottages, there are masses of books, perfect for a relaxing reading break in an idyllic cottage without have to overload your suitcase!
The kitchen is immaculately presented with granite worktops, stainless steel oven and hob, a dishwasher, washer drier, fridge, freezer, microwave and granite-topped island unit in the centre. If the chef in your family wants a holiday too, it's possible to order a full range of ready made meals - ranging from homecooking and tapas to fine dining - to be in your cottage when you arrive. A menu and price list will also be sent when your booking is confirmed. The downstairs accommodation is completed by a bathroom with a power shower, making this cottage wheelchair accessible. Three cottages at Beacon Hill Farm have M2 Mobility Grading and many others are on one level. If one of your party is disabled, please contact the owners by telephone before making a booking so that you can discuss your exact requirements and assess the suitability of your preferred accommodation.
Upstairs, there is one double bedroom with a king-size bed and television, two twin bedrooms, and a bathroom with a bath and power shower. There are foldable travel cots and high chairs available at no extra charge along with cot sheet. Please bring a duvet and other bedding for the cot. All cottages benefit from a bath and a constant supply of hot water and come equipped with Sky satellite TV. At the spa reception you can check your e-mail using Wi-Fi and your own laptop or the inhouse computer.
All the cottages are high-end 4 - 5 star and provide superb cottage accommodation for a self-catering holiday near Alnwick and Morpeth in Northumberland.

If you are coming from the north use the A697, the Coldstream road. The A697 starts south of Edinburgh, off the A68. The A697 runs through Coldstream and Wooler to Longhorsley. Turn right immediately one enters the village, turn left for Stanton 350 yards later, then drive 1 mile to a cross-roads. Turn left, travel half a mile up hill then turn right to Beacon Hill. Take the second drive and drive to the top.
If you are coming from the south follow the signs to Morpeth on the A1, then turn onto the A697 north of Morpeth (do NOT go into Morpeth). After half a mile you will pass a large garden centre, Heighlygate Nurseries. Two hundred yards past the nurseries take the left turn which is signposted to Beacon Hill. It is very easy to overshoot this turn and end up in Longhorsley! Once you have turned off it is two and a half miles up hill to the farm. Follow the signposts. Take the second drive on arrival at Beacon Hill. Drive to your cottage if you know where it is and just go in and start your holiday. Someone will be around to welcome you and show you the Spa.
Change over day is Saturday during peak season, Friday during off-peak season.
