Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is one of Northumberland’s hidden coastal gems, known for its sweeping sandy bay, promenade and traditional seaside feel. The bay stretches for around 1. 5km, making it ideal for morning strolls, sea air and easy beach days, while the promenade offers a sheltered walk with lovely views along the coast. Shops and cafés are close by, so it is easy to wander out for breakfast, coffee or an evening treat.
The town also has some fascinating local character. One of its best-known landmarks is The Couple, a striking offshore sculpture by Sean Henry that stands out in the bay and has become a real symbol of Newbiggin. Visitors can also explore the Newbiggin Maritime Centre, where you can learn more about the town’s fishing heritage, lifeboat history and coastal past. It is a great fun fact that Newbiggin is home to one of the UK’s oldest operational lifeboat stations, adding to the strong sense of maritime history here.
For food and drink, guests will find a good choice of fishand chip shops, cafés, takeaways, pubs and restaurants in and around the town centre, making it easy to keep everything within walking distance.

Local visitor guides highlight Newbiggin’s restaurants and seafront eateries as part of the appeal, whether you are after a casual lunch, a hearty pub meal or traditional fish and chips by the sea.
Golfers are well placed too, with historic Newbiggin Golf Club close by. Founded in 1884, it is one of the oldest clubs in England and offers a scenic coastal course shaped by the Northumberland landscape. It is a great option for anyone wanting to combine a seaside holiday with a round or two on a characterful course.
Pigeon Loft is also well positioned for exploring further afield by car. Warkworth, Amble and Druridge Bay make excellent day trips, while the wider Northumberland coast offers castles, harbour villages and beautiful beaches to discover. Whether you are enjoying the promenade, walking the dog by the sea, tucking into fish and chips or heading out to explore the coast, Pigeon Loft is a superb base for a memorable seaside escape.
