Border Rigg, which adjoins the owner’s farmhouse, has been beautifully updated whilst retaining all the charm and character, including a stunning inglenook fireplace in the open plan living space. The comfort continues into the large double bedroom, which has a cosy and comfortable bed, and the modern shower room. A lovely inviting cottage, Border Rigg is perfect for a couple wanting to enjoy a really relaxing and peaceful break in the stunning Cumbrian countryside. Set on the owner’s working farm, Border Rigg enjoys one of the most peaceful and stunning rural positions and you can relax in the garden taking in that view or just watching the wildlife and farm animals.
From the doorstep there are various short walks if you would like to have a stroll on the farm, however remember your walking boots or wellies as it sometimes can be wet in Cumbria!! Along the way look out for the number of sculptures which the owner and his son have made over the years, and which are spread around the farm; you may even have caught sight of some on your drive up.
Just sitting below Border Rigg, Bewcastle is a small hamlet in the north of Cumbria very close to the Scottish border and is home to the famous 7th-century Bewcastle Cross; the sundial on its surface is the oldest in Britain, divided into the four ‘tides’ which governed the working day in medieval times. The nearest shops are in Brampton which is 12 miles away where they hold a very good market every Wednesday. The nearest pub is 5 miles away.
Whilst tranquilly situated in a beautiful location, Border Rigg is ideally placed for exploring the wider area from the Lake District National Park, the Northumberland National Park and just over the border into Scotland. Of course you are in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country where you can walk parts of the wall and visit the Roman forts along the way. Many other attractions are within a short drive, including Lanercost Priory, a well-preserved medieval monastic site.
You can spend a day exploring Talkin Tarn Country Park with its 65-acre lake and acres of farmland and woodland. Here you can sail, windsurf, canoe or hire a rowing boat or just take a quiet stroll through the mature woodlands then relax in the tea room with its superb views of the tarn.
For the adventurous, the world class 7Stanes mountain biking centre at Newcastleton offers some of the best mountain biking in the country with routes to suit not only the experienced mountain biker but also beginners or those just looking for a bit of gentle fun. No visit to the area would be complete without enjoying the Kielder Water and Forest Park, which is home to Kielder Observatory with its exciting programme of astronomical events throughout the year and where you can experience a night sky which is out of this world. At nearly 580 square miles, this dark sky zone is the largest Gold Tier Dark Sky Park area of protected night sky in Europ
