Eskdale is a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks in the Lake District, either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass, an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house! The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and for fishing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway terminal is about a mile away and runs along the valley, its steam trains leisurely making the seven mile journey down to the sea.

Eskdale Golf Course is a 15 minute drive away. There are also various outdoor activity centres offering a range of climbing, canoeing, gully walking etc.

Although Gillbank Cottage feels isolated, it is only 15 minutes walk from the Boot Inn or Brook House Inn, or half an hour from the Woolpack Inn.

The village shop and post office (a 5 minute drive away), Eskdale Stores, sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers. There is an organic farm and farmshop in Santon Bridge, a 15 minute drive away. Eskdale is an idyllic place to stay in Cumbria and this is a wonderful cottage to rent in the Lake District

This 400-year-old self catering cottage rests among the mountains of the famous Lake District National Park. Accessed by private road, the property benefits from an idyllic location in the heart of the western lakes. With five bedrooms, one ensuite, and two further bathrooms, the property easily sleeps ten people. Recently renovated and refurbished to a high standard, Gillbank Cottage boasts the latest in modern convenience while maintaining the intimate features of a classic Lakeland cottage.

The kitchen has plenty of space for cooking for ten. There is a large American style fridge with cold water and ice dispensers. The cooker has 5 rings and there is also a microwave, dishwasher and dining area which has a large extending French Oak table with matching oak chairs and benches to comfortably seat 10

The sitting room has widescreen television with Sky+ satellite, DVD and VHS video player. There is a broad fireplace containing a powerful solid fuel stove with glass windows for safe operation as either an open fire or a closed stove. Coal and firewood are provided to create the perfect atmosphere. Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, cards and other games are provided for entertainment.

Directions from the south: Leave the M6 motorway at junction 36 for Kendal/Lakes. Follow signs to Barrow (A590). Turn right to Workington (A5092) 3 miles beyond Newby Bridge and follow this road for 10 miles (it bypasses Broughton-in-Furness). Turn right to Ulpha before the River Duddon (at the traffic lights 3/4 mile beyond Broughton). After 4 miles turn left in Ulpha village to the steep hill signed Eskdale. Follow the fell road to the King George IV pub (6 miles). Turn right up the valley road. After two miles you will reach the Brook House Inn. Turn left here and continue to the end of the road. Opposite the Boot Inn, just before the hump backed bridge there is a track to your right (it has a wooden sign saying bridleway and no unauthorised vehicles - there is also a white painted sign saying no parking, tractors turning). Go up this track, keep left when it forks and you will eventually come to Gillbank which is on your left just before the road leads to the Temple's farmyard. Please park within the grounds of Gillbank.
