Lowther Cottage is a charming Grade II* listed terraced cottage in the Lake District National Park on the edge of the Lowther Castle Estate. This delightful workers cottage was built in the 1770s and is situated in a conservation village designed by the renowned architect Robert Adam for the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. One of a collection of pretty sandstone cottages set around lawned courtyards, the cottage has a listed status, and the charm and character of this historic property is retained and evident today. Lowther Cottage is furnished in a delightful mix of contemporary and traditional décor to offer a most appealing holiday home.
An enclosed patio area just off the kitchen offers space to sit and enjoy dining al fresco. Cyclists keen to take advantage of the fabulous routes in the area will appreciate the bike storage facilities. A short distance from the pretty village of Askham, Lowther Village is ideally situated for exploring Ullswater, Keswick and enjoying the delights of the Northern Lakes. Alternatively, the beautiful Eden Valley is on the doorstep for walks, breathtaking scenery and villages offering Cumbrian hospitality at its finest, with the market town of Penrith 4 miles away.
Lowther model village was said to have been built in order to move the original village and thus improve the view from Lowther Castle.
A visitor attraction in itself, the Lowther Estate offers guests a wealth of experiences, including Lowther Castle with its stunning Gothic profile, and the extensive gardens and picturesque grounds running down to the River Lowther. Annual events include The Lowther Show held every August, a family orientated traditional country fair, and Kendal Calling, an annual music festival held every July with hundreds of bands entertaining a capacity crowd of music lovers.
