Extra Amenities

Enjoy a real taste of rural Dorset in this Grade II listed, 18th-century thatched cottage. Settle in and feel at home; the cottage is full of historic character and original features, and is comfortably furnished, with plenty of books to enjoy in the cosy living room. The kitchen/breakfast room looks over the peaceful cottage garden, a great place to relax while looking out for finches, woodpeckers and other feathered visitors.

The cottage lies in the hamlet of Lower Bockhampton, which was the setting for Thomas Hardy’s novel ’Under the Greenwood Tree. ’ The River Frome meanders through the village, home to a renowned restaurant, and you can walk or cycle along the river path to the county town of Dorchester with its many museums, shops and attractions.

Another walk from the front door takes you through the woods to Thomas Hardy’s cottage at Higher Bockhampton. The lake and gardens of Kingston Maurward are on the doorstep, and golf and fishing are available nearby.

There is so much to do in this beautiful part of Dorset. Have a day out on the spectacular Jurassic Coast, enjoying magnificent clifftop views from the South Coast path and take in Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, or evocative Tyneham village.

For family fun, hop on the Swanage Steam Line and visit Corfe Castle, or head to Monkey World, the Bovington Tank Museum or the Dinosaur museum in Dorchester. Just 7 miles away is Weymouth with its glorious sandy beaches, Georgian seafront, old harbour and traditional entertainment. Heading west on one of Britain’s most beautiful roads will take you through Abbotsbury, with the Swannery and Subtropical Gardens, to lovely Bridport and West Bay. Sandy beaches at Weymouth, 7 miles.
