This wonderful, Grade II listed, Georgian mansion is now home to a handful of stylish apartments and makes a great base from which to visit the North York Moors National Park. The apartment has access to a garden shared with Apartment 8, and communal gardens. The pretty village of Ruswarp is close by with the River Esk running through it, where during the summer months, you can hire boats. The village also has an excellent butchers, shop and local pub.

One of the most popular destinations on the North Yorkshire coast is the busy working harbour of Whitby, 3 miles away, famous for its connections with the fictional character, Dracula, where the author Bram Stoker is said to have found his inspiration for the book from the abbey at Whitby.

Whitby has held several Goth weekends which are extremely popular, even with international guests. The quaint cobbled street with very interesting, independent shops to browse, leads to the 199 steps up to the abbey. Quite often you will catch the people counting them on their way to the top from where you have the spectacular abbey standing proud on the headland. Its original use in the 7th century was a Christian abbey that later became a Benedictine abbey.

The walks along the rugged clifftop form part of the 109-mile Cleveland Way Trail, and for those of you who love the great outdoors, there are fantastic walks along the clifftops to Robin Hood’s Bay and Ravenscar.

If you prefer a more leisurely walk, there’s the old ’cinder track’ along the former railway line between Whitby and Scarborough, and this makes a great cycle route or a flat walking area.
The North York Moors railway runs from Whitby to Pickering, travelling across the moors on a beautiful steam train, stopping off at Goathland, the fictional village of Aidensfield in the TV programme, ’Heartbeat’. Beach 3 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mil
