Bathurst Cottage is the perfect base for both local walks straight from the doorstep or close by is the National Trust property of Hardwick Hall with its 16th-century inn and restaurant. A short journey takes you to the local market towns of Matlock, Matlock Bath, Bakewell and Buxton with their excellent shops, inns, and restaurants. In addition to the Hardwick Estate, a short journey will take you to attractions which include Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Newstead Abbey, once home to the romantic poet Lord Byron, or even pick a spot for a picnic in the 3800 acres of Clumber Park. If history is your thing, the castles of Pevril, Riber and Bolsover are all local and worth a visit.



Always a hit with children of any age is Chatsworth Farm and adventure playground plus all year-round theme parks of Alton Towers or Heights of Abraham, not forgetting the cable cars at Matlock Bath (also the place to be especially on a Sunday if you are keen on motorbikes). Still fancy something different? Why not visit the Blue John and Speedwell mines at Castleton or the Crich Tramway Museum? For those feeling active, hire a bike at Sherwood Pines with its a labyrinth of cycle and walking trails and while you are there, why not head over to visit Sherwood Forest with its legend of Robin Hood.
