Nestled just beyond the Cromford Canal in the pretty village of Whatstandwell sits Barley Cottage (ref UK32240) and Wheatsheaf Cottage (UK32242), a perfectly located haven ready to welcome you for your break in this wonderful are of Derbyshire. Sympathetically renovated throughout, they combine character and charm together with the all-important wood burner to cuddle up in front of on a cold winters evening. The cottage is part of a Grade II listed former inn believed to date back to the 1600s. In its prime The Wheatsheaf Inn is reported to have been a very popular public house. In 1880 Florence Nightingale considered purchasing the property to convert into a coffee house and reading rooms, to offer an alternative to alcohol for the working man, as all-night drinking sessions were not uncommon at that time.
You can enjoy countryside, forest and canalside walks right from the doorstep of these perfect retreats, while the more serious outdoor enthusiasts can head to the magnificent Peak District National Park to experience some of the finest scenery that England has to offer.
Head into nearby Matlock where you will be able to sample some of the wonderful food in the many eateries on offer, and the lovely, quirky shops to pick up a souvenir. Why not visit the amazing Heights of Abraham in Matlock Bath, where you can reach the stunning hilltop park via a cable car ride, with cavern tours and walking trails to discover at the very top. Learn of the local history at the Peak District Mining Museum and explore the interactive exhibits and uncover the life of a Derbyshire lead miner. A family friendly adventure can be found at Matlock Farm Park, which is home to a host of lovely animals and a fantastic play area to keep the little ones entertained, as well as a riding school too.

A real must is a visit back in time to Crich Tramway Village, where you can take a trip through history at The National Tramway Museum, or explore the magnificent Chatsworth House in Bakewell, a filming location for the feature film ’Pride and Prejudice’, as the handsome Mr Darcy’s Pemberley Manor, set within vast grounds and filled with a magnificent collection, including artefacts from Ancient Egypt, some of Europe’s best art collections and modern sculpture. South of the town is the start of the High Peak Cycle Trail, and to the north are the market towns of Bakewell and Hassop - not to be missed! Shop 3 miles, pub 1 mile and restaurant 500 yards.
