Perfect for walkers and cyclists, there are many established public footpaths that pass directly through the dale, including the Pennine Way.
They link with the small villages of Romaldkirk, Mickleton, Middleton-inTeesdale and Egglestone, providing many scenic walks. A popular route winds along the banks of Hury Reservoir and can be extended further to link with Blackton and Balderhead reservoirs, before taking you past the former home of the famous Hannah Hauxwell. The land she farmed is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the diverse flora and fauna it boasts. For avid birdwatchers, this habitat supports a variety of native birds, some of which are on the red list for endangered species. Examples to keep a look out for in the surrounding landscape are the curlew, lapwing and the black grouse.
Alternatively there is fly fishing for trout on Hury Reservoir, or water sports including sailing and windsurfing on nearby Grassholme Reservoir. A little further afield, but still within a 10 mile drive, there are opportunities to go clay pigeon shooting, golfing or enjoy a gentle stroll to High Force waterfall.
The quaint little villages between Buckswell Cottage and the historic market town of Barnard Castle are also well worth a visit. Between them they have a good variety of shops including, butchers, bakers, fish and chip shops, pubs, cafés, bistros arts and craft shops and antique shops. The Bowes Museum, Raby Castle and Eggleston Abbey can be reached within a 30-minute drive. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 4 mile
