Whittle Dene Reservoir House is a Grade ll listed building, built in 1848 by the well-known architect John Dobson for the Gateshead and Newcastle Water Company. Originally the superintendent’s house, it stands proudly on the banks of the reservoir with uninterrupted views from all windows. Built in Tudor style with a two storey octagonal tower, and grand features throughout, the property is truly unique in every way. This property is luxurious and full of character, and is the ideal place to stay for families, friends and special occasions. With a shaker style kitchen, impressive gas fueled range, full range of electric appliances, De’Longhi accessories and a Nespresso coffee machine for your early morning coffee. Separate utility with washer and dryer, and ample room in the entrance lobby for those muddy boots and coats. There is a walk-in dressing room and en-suite toilet, feature fireplace, 55” Smart TV and dressing table. Outside there is a gated entrance, graveled driveway suitable for three vehicles. A large enclosed garden sits at the water’s edge, a beautiful and tranquil spot. With patio area and garden furniture with BBQ space and a fabulous hot tub to relax and re-charge.
The reservoir is set in beautiful Northumberland countryside and is the perfect place for a quiet day of coarse fishing. Lovers of the outdoors will enjoy the extensive nearby walks, including sections of the Hadrian’s Wall, perhaps relax for a bite to eat at the picnic area next to the bird hide. The area is also a nature reserve and perfect for bird watchers, with an array of wildlife amidst beautiful scenery for keen walkers and cyclists.
Hadrian’s Wall is easily reached, and affords some of the most spectacular scenery in all of England. Discover the famous Vindolanda Roman fort, The Sill Landscape Discovery Centre and the world famous Sycamore Gap. For keen golfers there are some excellent courses nearby at Matfen, Slaley, and Close House, previous host to the British Masters, only a short drive away. Less than an hour’s drive will take you to Kielder Water and Forest Park, with an abundance of walking routes, mountain bike trails, a bird of prey centre, an observatory, and a host of other activities. A visit to the historic market town of Hexham is recommended, with stunning abbey, the oldest gaol in the country and an abundance of eclectic shops, restaurants and pubs. Continue to the beautiful Roman town of Corbridge and meander round its boutique shops, galleries, and antiques or take a riverside stroll. The golden beaches on the Heritage Coast are also within easy reach and make a lovely day out. The vibrant city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is also only a 25-minute drive.
