Extra Amenities

With beautiful sea views over the bay of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Violet Cottage is set on a terrace built in 1904 which sits at the end of the pretty bay. It has great views of the off shore sculpture ’the couple’, a Sean Henry sculpture, and over to Church Point. Sunday mornings you can see the lifeboat out practising or pop into the little shop and support the RNLI. Early risers will appreciate some lovely sunrises from the front windows over the sea, whilst a few steps out of the garden and there is a ramp taking you down to the promenade which stretches almost a mile along the seafront. The beach is never busy so you are certain to enjoy a relaxing time where you can pop into the local ice cream parlour set in the centre of the promenade or wander further onto the Maritime Centre with a small museum, gift shop and café.

Once a thriving fishing village, only a handful of ’cobles’ now go out to sea, but the village still has a great wet fish shop as well as a super fish and chip shop. The small village has plenty of takeaways if you don’t like cooking, as well as a friendly Italian and Indian restaurant, small cafés, a butchers and bakeries. You can catch a bus on the corner of the street or take the car over to Morpeth, a lovely historic little market town only 9 miles away, with a pretty riverside, great shops and eating places.

Northumberland was voted the best place to holiday in the 2018 British Travel Awards and all the roads around the county are easily accessible from here.

Travel onto the fantastic Heritage Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for miles of castles, sands, rugged coastline, friendly villages and Northumbrian hospitality. Inland is easily reached from here so travelling over to the Dark Sky Park, Northumberland’s award winning National Park, can easily be reached from Violet Cottage.

Only a few miles south, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay are beautiful places to visit with their long wide promenades with plenty of eateries and pubs, whilst Tynemouth has a lovely indoor weekend market nicknamed the ’Covent Garden of the North’. This is a super central location for reaching all that Northumberland has to offer. Beach 200 yards. Shop 250 yards, pub 400 yards and restaurant 850 yard
