Extra Amenities

Perfect for exploring this beautiful part of County Durham, Curlew Cottage stands detached, part way up a hill and boasts brilliant views across the rolling countryside and hills of the county. Built in the 1800s and with views to the rear, extending over the hills of Weardale, Curlew Cottage is traditional, warm and welcoming. Ideal for a couple wanting to enjoy a quiet rural break in a very quirky cottage, the property is full of unusual and original features. On the lower ground floor guests will find a small kitchen and dining room with a very low ceiling that adds to the character of the cottage. On the ground floor is a traditional living room with a balcony area that looks out across the countryside. This is the perfect place for bird spotters, with snipes and buzzards often flying by. On the first floor there is a double bedroom with kingsize bed and a bathroom. This is a real gem of a cottage and perfect for those guests looking for a quiet holiday, Curlew Cottage really is one of a kind.

Situated right at the heart of beautiful Weardale, the small town of Stanhope offers amenities and facilities popular with guests of all ages and at any time of year. A thriving market town, Stanhope boasts numerous places to eat, drink and enjoy the local produce, including a pie shop, bakery, fish and chip shop and plenty of pubs. With the county’s only open air heated swimming pool just a short walk away, guests can also take the opportunity to enjoy a dip in the water during the summer months. This is also the perfect location for guests who enjoy walking, cycling, hill running or rambling, as well as those wanting to just enjoy a leisurely stroll through some of the most splendid countryside that the county has to offer. There are multiple established walks, public footpaths, and bridle ways that run directly through the village and out into the nearby valleys, fells and unspoilt natural woodland. Cyclists will find themselves surrounded by routes of varying difficulty with some steep climbs, north and south of the cottage, as well as the quiet roads to Waskerley or Blanchland and the off road section of the Coast to Coast route between Rookhope and Rowley.

For a more leisurely mode of transport, guests can travel on the Weardale Railway, which runs between Stanhope and Bishop Auckland, and is transformed in season into the Train to Christmas Town. About a 10-minute drive away is Weardale Ski School, and the Durham Dales Centre is only a few minutes away - a great spot for discovering more about the area. Killhope Lead Mine, Beamish Living Museum, Frosterley, Wolsingham, and the cathedral city of Durham can all be reached in around a 30-minute drive. A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to visit the natural beauty of Cumbria and the Lake District, the Durham Dales, Northumberland and Newcastle. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
