Clematis Cottage is a 17th-century cottage with original oak beams situated in the hamlet of Yanwath. It has been renovated in 2021 with a new bathroom, kitchen and complete refurbishment. It borders the Lake District National Park and is approximately 3 miles from Pooley Bridge on Ullswater and the market town of Penrith. The cottage has loads of character with beautiful fitted kitchen with dining area and a lovely cosy sitting room with exposed stone and beamed ceilings, and a desk area too to catch up with your emails. There is a kingsize bed, new for 2021, in the double room and a lovely bathroom with shower, offering views over fields to the fells and Blencathra.
Yanwath Hall, a magnificent building, is about 100 yards away (although not open to the public). It has a 14th-century pele tower and can be viewed from the outside. Henge monuments Arthur’s Round table, a Neolithic earthwork, and Mayburgh Henge with a large standing stone in a circular bank, are about a mile walk away.
For fell walkers the High Street range is just 5 miles away and Helvellyn 10 miles away. There are multiple walks and cycle routes within the vicinity. The Ullswater steamers operate between Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Glenridding and Aira Force with a stunning waterfall you can walk to. You may even be lucky enough to see red squirrels there. You can combine walks with trips on the steamers from all these piers. Other activities include pony trekking, cycling, sailing instruction, hiring boats and of course, walks. The Ullswater Way is about 20 miles for those seeking a longer walk.
Yanwath has a village pub that serves food (open from 1st July 2021). Other neighbouring pretty villages with excellent inns and food included Askham and Tirril. Tirril pub is a mile walk from the cottage if you want to leave the car behind.
Askham has an outdoor swimming pool, 2 pubs and now boasts a Michelin star restaurant. Booking well in advance is advised!. Also nearby is the 19th-century Lowther Castle ruin set in Lowther Park with restored gardens and café open to the public. Penrith nearby has lots of individual shops and a variety of cafés, pubs and restaurants, artisan food shops and supermarkets, a leisure centre, a cinema with 3 screens, an art gallery with studios where artists can be seen working, and Penrith Castle ruin (where King Richard 3rd resided between1471 and 1485) in the park that is open to the public. There is also a Tourist Information Centre with adjacent Town Museum.
There is a bus route from Yanwath that through goes to Pooley Bridge and Windermere if you felt like leaving the car. The railway to the rear is unobtrusive as the cottage has thick walls, double glazing and insulation throughout
