Sitting on the south facing slopes of the iconic Blencathra, Garden Cottage is set in the wonderful village of Threlkeld in the Lake District National Park. The property dates back to circa 1700, and is one of the oldest houses in the village. On the ground floor, the original stone flooring runs throughout, along with beamed ceilings and windows that either enjoy views of the garden or the towering neighbourly fell range. Once entered through the utility area, a handy place to kick off shoes and hang your jackets, you walk through to the stunning open plan kitchen and dining area. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a hearty meal, although there is a very good pub nearby that offers excellent meals, so you could easily be tempted out for the evening.
Cooler evenings around the wood burner in the living room are the perfect place to sit and recap the day’s adventures, or even plan the days ahead. The comfy sofas and a large screen TV could be a perfect movie night for all the family. Upstairs you will find three bedrooms, a double and two twins, with a family bathroom to wake up revived and refreshed from a good night’s sleep. Your four legged friend is welcome to stay here, and there is a lovely enclosed garden for them to play in whilst you enjoy the views from the seating area.
There are plenty of walks right from the doorstep, so leave the car behind and tackle the numerous routes up Blencathra, or explore the old railway line path that goes for miles and is enjoyed by walkers and cyclists alike.
The A66 runs just past the village, and within minutes you will be in the popular market town of Keswick. Be sure to visit the Pencil Museum on those wet days, and on sunnier drier days, jump on to one of the launches that travel up and down Derwentwater, with plenty of stops to get off and explore.
This is a great base to discover so many interesting places in this part of the country. Easterly you are in the Eden Valley, or travel a little more north and you can walk along historic Hadrian’s Wall. The village itself is home to good local pubs serving real ale and home cooked food, a coffee shop for something lighter, and is very accessible using the local bus service too. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 300 yards
