The Windermere Lake steamers call in at the village of Lakeside and take passengers out on the water to soak up the atmosphere in style. The Lakeside to Haverthwaite Railway offers families an opportunity to slow down and enjoy steam travel of a different sort enjoying the views from the carriage windows.
The Aquarium of the Lakes is a firm favourite with families. Open all year, enjoy the day as a family with food, fun and facts about the Lakes. You can stroll leisurely to Fell Foot Park as it is less than a mile away. Picnic on the lawn or on the boathouse patio or, if you are feeling inquisitive, hire a rowing boat and explore the lakeshore from the water. There are lovely grounds and the children can go wild in the adventure playground.
Perhaps you would prefer to see the fells from horseback? Then your wish can easily be fulfilled with pony trekking only 3 miles away.
And if you or your family still want more outdoor activities then for the slightly older children Go Ape, a high-wire tree top forest adventure is also just 3 miles away. As you can see there are plenty of activities close to home without too much need to be in the car.
After expending all that energy you might have worked up quite an appetite and there are plenty of restaurants and pubs nearby. The Lakeside Hotel, only 500 metres away, is within easy walking distance and the Swan Inn is only a mile down the road. Or perhaps you might like to venture into Windermere and sample some of the local cuisine. Here you can find everything from a good British pub meal to Indian fare and even fine dining for those romantic evenings à deux.
At the end of a long day exploring why not just sit back and enjoy some quiet time at Woodside. Outside you can savour the sunshine in either the cottage garden, with its stunning views of the distant mountains, or have a barbeque and dine al fresco in the patio garden. Both are safe and secure for dogs and children and are well away from the main roads. There is parking here for two cars. When the weather turns too cool for sitting in the garden, curl up on the comfortable sofas in front of the 200 year old Inglenook fireplace with its wood burning stove and a bottle of wine and some good company. The sitting room features gorgeous oak beams, wooden floors and deep window seats and exudes history as you relax and enjoy your favourite films or shows on the large flatscreen TV, complete with SkyHD.
The kitchen is extremely well equipped with everything you could wish for. A hob, oven and grill, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine and tumble dryer provide all the mod cons imaginable. Plenty of cooking utensils, cutlery and kitchen linens are provided. With its light and airy feeling and large farmhouse table that seats 8, it invites everyone to gather there. Even small children are catered for so there is no need to bring the high chair, baby bowls, plates and cutlery along with you as they are also provided for your family.
After all the activity of the day it is blissful to retire to the master bedroom and sink into bed. The master suite features its own private en-suite bathroom with a shower, basin and WC and thick, fluffy towels provided for your use. The romantic double bed is complete with Egyptian cotton sheets and designer, co-ordinated bedding. Similar attention has been paid to the second double bedroom and the twin room as they also feature the same high standard in bedding and decoration. There is a contemporary family bathroom complete with a bath and power shower overhead, a basin and WC. Downstairs on the ground floor there is also a separate WC which is ideal for the elderly or children. All linens and towels are provided and all bedrooms are equipped with hair dryers, mirrors and plenty of wardrobe space. If you do have small children a cot is also there for your use. Children and pets are most welcome and, as it is largely on one level and provides disabled access, it is suitable for the elderly or infirm.
A Welcome Tray is provided upon arrival and heating, electricity, towels and linens are all included. One basket of logs is also provided for the wood burning stove.
