It’s not often you have to drive over a reservoir dam to reach your holiday accommodation; so, the adventure starts before you even arrive! Located by Wistlandpound Reservoir, popular with walkers, families and by those just wanting to get away from it all, The Calving Barn is the ideal accommodation when looking for modern simplicity wrapped in a quality package partly created using reclaimed and recycled quality woods and other materials. The barn has character, and warmth, and is part of a stylish and quirky site which has other properties on it, but also manages to achieve a sense of peaceful tranquility.
The area is renowned for its excellent trails which offer walkers and cyclists the scenery and adventure they’re looking for, and the surrounding countryside offers views out towards the rolling hills of Exmoor. Not at all far from the property is the stunning Exmoor National Park where you can walk, run, cycle or simply relax with a picnic, and at night, enjoy the amazing site above that is the magical night skies in Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve.
The park also has abundant wildlife, including ponies, sheep and red deer that graze the open moorland and overhead you might see falcons, buzzards and even the rare merlin. The area is also perfect for exploring North Devon as a whole with all its attractions such as the many rugged coastal towns and quaint villages like beautiful Lynton and Lynmouth, Valley of the Rocks, nearby Combe Martin with its beach where fantastic sunsets can be observed; Ilfracombe with its lovely harbour and excellent restaurants and the world-famous Clovelly Village to name just a few.
Awe-inspiring scenery is not hard to find along the North Devon coastline and the fantastic South West Coastal Path which runs through the region is a perfect place to enjoy this. Ideal for walkers, runners and view seekers, there are 90 miles of stunning walks on offer! There are also plenty of family-oriented places to visit including Exmoor Zoo, Milky Way Adventure Park, The Big Sheep farm-themed park, Watermouth Castle and Combe Martin’s Wildlife and Dinosaur Park along with many others.
If stunning, award-winning beaches popular with surfers and sunseekers alike are your thing then North Devon will leave you spoilt for choice with Saunton Sands, Woolacombe, Croyde and Westward Ho! all within easy reach by car. These are regularly voted as some of the best beaches in the UK and even the world! The popular Tarka Trail is also recommended if you enjoy great riverside scenery. It provides the unique opportunity to follow a disused railway line on foot or by bicycle and will take you through places like Fremington Quay with its excellent café, Instow with its estuary beach and view towards the lovely fishing village of Appledore through to Bideford and beyond. Beach 8 mile
