The village of Ruswarp is within walking distance and makes a great day out by the river with boating opportunities, garden tea rooms, a miniature railway and a rare plants centre. Whitby hosts many festivals throughout the year with Goth weekend, folk weeks and 60’s festivals, when the town comes alive with visitors from far and wide. A 3 mile stretch of sandy beach, a colourful harbour, a marina, the famous St Mary’s Church and the 12th century abbey ruins, alleyways and ginnels lined with quaint little cottages complete the picture.
A little further to the south is the more elegant seaside town of Scarborough with an eclectic mix of shopping, museums, art galleries, some fine dining restaurants and the North and South Bays boasting fine sandy beaches, fun fairs, amusement arcades and donkey rides on the beach. The minster city of York is approximately an hour’s drive and well worth a visit. Historic homes, halls and castles are plentiful in this part of North Yorkshire and are easily reached.
