Whitby is a lively fishing town made famous by the novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker. Why not climb the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey, where the mythical creature is said to have climbed from the shipwreck just off this wonderful coastline, for a fantastic view down across the town. Enjoy the cobbled back streets and its delightful selection of shops. Although famous for award-winning fish and chips, Whitby has a lot more to offer from Michelin star restaurants and gastropubs, to pubs offering live music and real ales. Enjoy a ride through town on the open top tour bus or venture out to sea in search of whales, seals and dolphins on one of the pleasure cruisers. The Cleveland Way runs through the town and offers wonderful coastal walks all along the picturesque Yorkshire Heritage Coast or a wander along the Cinder Track will take you down into Robin Hood’s Bay and beyond.
You will find surfing schools and stories of piracy along the coast in stunning bays and coves such as Staithes and Runswick Bay, as well as Saltburn and Sandsend. Traditional seaside resorts such as Scarborough are easily accessible with attractions including The Sealife Centre, Peasholme Park, two beaches, an outdoor music arena and a water park.
Take the Harry Potter Express Steam Train into the heart of the North York Moors and ‘Heartbeat’ country, where you will find Goathland, which still has some of the original film set on show. Beach 900 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 450 yards.
