Mayflower Cottage is situated close to the beach in the famous port of Harwich. It is a welcoming and comfortable terraced house which is ideal for families and those looking for a classic seaside break, being within easy walking distance of the seafront. This holiday cottage is also within easy walking distance of the railway station, important for that car-free holiday. There is a large and comfortable sitting room on the first floor with views across St Helen’s Green and Harwich beach towards the busy port of Felixstowe. Bedrooms 1 and 2 both enjoy far reaching views towards Harwich beach to the front, and towards Shotley Point and the River Stour estuary to the rear. The master bedroom is light, quiet and spacious with a comfortable kingsize bed; the second bedroom is very quiet with two 3ft single beds.
The Harwich area is steeped in maritime history with connections to the Jamestown and Mayflower expeditions, and to the Royal Navy. It is located on the north east tip of Essex on the estuary of the River Stour and River Orwell. There is always plenty of activity on the water to watch, from small yachts sailing in the estuary to large shipping containers manoeuvring into Felixstowe docks.
The Ha’Penny Pier is an ideal location from which to sit and take in the views, to go crabbing with children or to enjoy refreshments. Visitors can enjoy the Electric Palace which is one of Britain’s first cinemas, built in 1911, the deep-moated Redoubt which is a Napoleonic fort built into the hill looking out over the harbour entrance, or meander through the old Harwich town glimpsing the same sights as Christopher Jones, Master of the Mayflower, and the famous diarist Samuel Pepys. Harwich wildlife beach, 110 yards from Mayflower Cottage, is ideal for both summer or winter strolls, with beaches at Dovercourt offering family swimming just half a mile away. Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze and Clacton-on-Sea are within a short drive.
Nearby days out could include Colchester, the oldest town on record, Constable Country just into Suffolk or Pin Mill, the National Trust’s delightful nature walk along the River Orwell. For the rare rainy day, there is the local swimming pool and sports centre.
Harwich Railway Station provides regular trains direct into London, ideal not only for day trips but also for direct access to Mayflower Cottage for a car-free holiday. There are frequent local events to entertain guests including the Shanty Festival in October, Festival of the Arts in July, Redoubt Beer Festival in July/August, New Year fireworks and the secret garden weekend. These events are organised by the local community and are accessible and welcoming to all. There are convenience shops, many excellent pubs and several restaurants within 330 yards. If you enjoy Thai food, there is a restaurant nearby serving excellent, home made authentic Thai meals which should not be missed. If you prefer more traditional food, there is a restaurant on the harbour which will not disappoint. Local pubs also provide good food. Mayflower Cottage offers the opportunity for a romantic getaway or a family holiday, a fishing trip, cycling, sailing, golfing, walking, relaxing, eating out or staying home. Whatever takes your fancy, Mayflower Cottage is the ideal locatio
