Dorothy Forster Court Cottage
2 bedrooms, sleeps 4

Enjoy the views of Alnwick Castle from this property, steeped in history and thought to be one of the oldest buildings in Alnwick.

Dorothy Forster Court is thought to be one of the oldest buildings in Alnwick. This charming Grade II listed property dates back to the 17th-century and is located only a few yards from the entrance to Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The property is accessed via a private doorway on Narrowgate where a small passageway leads to its independent entrance. The accommodation is well presented over the first and second floors of the property and is stylishly furnished throughout. The adorable arched door leads to three steps then a further eight to the first floor where there is a bright and airy open plan living space, there is also a bathroom and bedroom which overlooks a delightful courtyard. Further stairs leads up to the second floor where there is a king size bed nestled within beautiful original solid beams and views to the castle.

Although the owner’s do not provide a cot, guests are welcome to bring their own. Dorothy Forster and her brother Tom originally lived in Bamburgh Castle, which had been owned by the Forster family from the 16th century. During the Jacobite Rebellion, Tom enlisted to fight for the Stuart cause and was captured and put in Newgate Goal, London. In a daring plan Dorothy disguised as a servant, travelled to London and using a duplicate key, helped her brother escape and he fled to France. Dorothy arranged for a coffin to be filled with sawdust and placed in the family vault at Bamburgh to outwit the authorities. After Tom’s death in 1738, his body was returned to England and laid to rest in St Aidan’s Church in Bamburgh, and Dorothy was buried alongside him. There is a wide array of amenities including a cinema/playhouse, restaurants, independent shops and a variety of pubs available within a gentle stroll from Dorothy Forster Court.

Alnwick Castle, the film location for ’Harry Potter’s Hogwarts’ is a popular visitor attraction, or visit the Alnwick Gardens, a spectacular interpretation of a formal garden, including a grand cascade waterfall and poison garden. Visitors can also dine in the restaurant of the largest tree house in Europe. Dorothy Forster Court is an excellent choice for those seeking a unique base that gives easy access to explore the beautiful 20 mile stretch of Heritage Coastline, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east and the wild and lonely expanses of the heather-capped Cheviot Hills to the west.
