Rowley Stone Cottages are set within twenty acres of peaceful countryside, offering guests a tranquil escape while remaining close to excellent attractions. Originally dating back to the 1600s, the former dairy barns and hay stores of Mainsfield Farm have been beautifully restored. Today, they house five luxury holiday cottages – Wagtail, Swallow, Barn Owl, Peewit and Red Kite – which together can accommodate up to 22 guests. The cottages sit within a secure gated development, complete with private parking and a daytime concierge service for any help or advice you may need. Guests are welcomed at reception with their keys, cottage details and a generous welcome pack, complete with fluffy robes and slippers.
Wagtail Cottage is a stylish ground-floor retreat, designed with comfort in mind. The open-plan living and dining area has a flicker-effect fire, Smart TV and cosy seating, while the kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need.

Two double bedrooms provide restful accommodation, complemented by a modern bathroom with a walk-in double shower. Each cottage benefits from its own private indoor spa suite, featuring a bubbling hot tub, breakfast bar and robe hangers. Large doors can be opened to let in fresh air and starlit skies while you soak. For convenience, even a dog crate is provided so four-legged friends can relax safely. Outside, the shared courtyard patio offers tables and seating for both quiet moments and sociable evenings. A pergola provides a covered area for drinks or reading, while a shared sauna and ice bath, available by arrangement, extend the spa experience.
The location is perfect for exploring. Just a short distance away is Derwent Manor Hotel and Spa, ideal for a meal or leisure facilities. Walkers and cyclists will love the bridleways, footpaths and the famous C2C cycle route nearby, while Derwent Reservoir and Waterside Park offer fishing, sailing and scenic family trails.

There is so much to see within easy reach. The historic city of Durham, with its UNESCO-listed cathedral and riverside walks, is a short drive away, as are Barnard Castle and Raby Castle with its deer park and gardens. Families will enjoy Beamish Open Air Museum, only 13 miles from the cottages, while Newcastle and Gateshead offer vibrant shopping, dining and cultural experiences 18 miles away.
For lovers of the outdoors, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the dramatic castles and coastline of Northumberland can all be reached in under an hour. With a traditional pub just 30 yards away and shops and supermarkets in Consett, three miles from the cottages, everything is close at hand. Whether you are looking for relaxation in your own spa suite, countryside walks, or memorable days out, Wagtail Cottage provides the perfect base for your Northeast adventure.
