Set on the high street in this small, friendly fishing village, Smugglers Retreat is conveniently located to get around the village without your car. Just over the road from the promenade and bandstand, you literally cross the road, walk past the highly acclaimed family ice cream shop which is housed in a listed art deco style building and you’re on the sea front. Surfers and fishermen can regularly be spotted on the beach and the rock pools are ideal for the little ones to explore.
This first floor apartment with a large living room with beams has a partial sea view and overlooks the street and bandstand from the front windows. Nearby you have a selection of cafés, a family butcher, fishmonger and a small craft ale bar. Newbiggin-by-the-Sea used to be a thriving fishing village but now only a few boats go to sea and you can see these by the lifeboat house, one of the oldest in the UK.
At the end of the bay is the Newbiggin Maritime Centre which has a small museum, café and holds events. The local bus stop is over the road and you can hop on a bus to nearby Morpeth or Newcastle.
Morpeth is a pretty historic town with a weekly market and abundance of shops and cafés, riverside boats and a pretty park. Ashington is only 3 miles away with a swimming pool and spa centre housed in the large sports centre. Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is on the edge of a fabulous road network making it simple to visit in all directions whether you choose to travel west to Hadrian’s Wall or north up the beautiful unspoilt Heritage Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, dotted with castles and small villages.
Towards the far north of the county is Lindisfarne, The Holy Island which you reach via a causeway and featured in the local author L. J Ross book. Alnwick is easily reached where you can see the famous castle used for some Harry Potter and Downton Abbey scenes. Further south along the coast you have Tynemouth with award-winning beaches and lovely bistros and cafés and Whitley Bay with the regenerated Spanish City housing a champagne bar and lovely views over the ocean. Smuggler’s Retreat is a great location for couples or a small family where the children can explore the rock pools. Beach 200 yards. Shop 100 yards, pub 200 yards and restaurant 500 yards
