On the edge of the small village of Hooe, where the local publican James Blackman once operated a notorious smuggling gang in the 1700s, lie these 19th-century barn conversions. High House Holiday Cottage No 1 (ref POOV) and Wheelwrights (ref UKC3510) each provide thoughtful holiday accommodation for two guests. Enjoy rural views from the patio and stroll around the owner’s orchard. Close to the unspoilt pebble beach at Pevensey Bay, see the castle with two-thirds of its towered walls still standing and maybe spot “The Pale Lady of Pevensey”.

Enjoy a concert at the bandstand, or visit Eastbourne’s Sovereign Harbour where you can take a boat trip out to the iconic cliffs at Beachy Head. At the heart of “1066 Country” is the attractive market town of Battle, perfect for enjoying afternoon tea, or finding a souvenir of your holiday in one of the art galleries and experience the famous battle itself through dramatic film and audio tours witnessing the event that changed the course of English history – The Battle of Hastings.
Take a picnic to Glynebourne, visit National Trust houses, castles and gardens, or book a wine tasting tour at an award-winning vineyard. Good rail connections from Battle to London for further sightseeing opportunities. Beach 3 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.
