Baytree Cottage is a lovely two-bed cottage situated in Hill Head, Hampshire. Built by the Admiralty for the Coastguard at the turn of the 20th century to house the coastguard personnel and their families, it boasts fabulous views of the Solent and is just a couple of minutes’ stroll from the shingle beach.
The beach is perfect for water sports enthusiasts, great for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing or just watching the boats come and go. Although now a tranquil beach, Hill Head played an important role in history and was one of the loading zones used for the WW2 D-Day invasion.
The cottage is the perfect starting point for some fine coastal walks along the Solent Way, England’s Coastal Path.
Head eastwards to Lee-on-the-Solent and west to Meon shore and the River Hamble estuary.
It’s a great place to spot birds, with Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve being a well-known birdwatching site, containing a variety of wetland habitats, just beyond the harbour. There is a pub within a few minutes walk and plenty of restaurants, cafes, and takeaways nearby, along with plenty of places to visit locally, including the Hovercraft Museum, Titchfield Abbey, and Portchester Castle.
Travel to nearby Gosport and start to explore naval history by visiting the submarine museum.
Then take the ferry over to Portsmouth where you can visit The Historic Dockyard and see the world’s most famous ships such as HMS Victory, The Mary Rose, and the Warrior. From there you can visit Gunwharf Quays for some fantastic retail shopping and dining. Take the hovercraft from Southsea to visit the Isle of Wight and visit Queen Victoria’s former residence, Osborne House, which is visible from Hill Head beach. There are so many more attractions to visit in Hampshire, including the New Forest, and Winchester, making Baytree Cottage a superb place for couples and families to come and enjoy all that the South Coast has to offer
