Broughton Hall historic house dates back to the 16th century and sits proudly amidst 3,000 acres of estate grounds, skirting the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The spacious saloon offers an impressive welcome as you ascend the steps to enter through the pillared column porch entrance. Explore the many sitting areas, and then relax during your stay as your every whim will be catered for. The owner has thoughtfully provided a complementary welcome pack including wine, milk and a selection of delicious homemade cakes. The library is full of over 5,000 books and a welcoming open fireplace designed by Charles Sylvester in the 19th century. Read about the history of England, the life of Napoleon Bonaparte or Broughton Hall itself, which is now in the hands of the 32nd generation of the Tempest family, in a line of custodians of the Estate dating back to the 11th century.
Throughout the house are examples of furniture by Gillows of Lancaster. Relax in one of the breathtaking drawing rooms, complete with stunning chandeliers, and a piano if you fancy a tinkle on the ivories. The Red Drawing Room was even used as a film location for Emily Bronte’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. Feel right at home around one of the open fires, found in almost every room, and soak up the history of this magnificent hall.
There’s no need to worry about keeping the fire stoked as there’ll always be someone on hand to do that for you, as well as turn down your beds and cater to your every need. You won’t need to lift a finger during your stay with all your meals prepared for you by the Estate chef and his team - enjoy a celebratory meal in the formal dining room, or this is the perfect setting for a murder mystery evening.
Wander through the conservatory which opens out to the gardens to the rear of the hall. It’s flooded with light and is full of greenery as well as a hand-painted mural on one wall, sure to be a talking point over breakfast or afternoon tea.
The ante-room and billiards room makes an ideal social space and has a stunning ceiling, full-size billiards table and Bose iPod dock. Also on display in this room is a remarkable dolls house made in the 1920s by the current custodian’s grand-father from cigar boxes – it’s not one to be played with however you can read about its history and creation whilst admiring every detail which has been captured in miniature.
The 17 bedrooms are spread over the first and second floors with most offering fabulously spacious en-suite facilities or a separate bathroom close by.
The bedrooms are individually named and furnished creating a unique and characterful, relaxing space in each one. Choose from ‘Oak’ bedroom which has a fabulously carved Jacobean four-poster bed, wood-panelled walls and a free-standing copper bath in the en-suite, to ‘North’ with a grand four-poster bed made by Gillows, and an opulent carpet – which one will you choose?
On the second floor is the Penthouse area which has its own living area complete with Sky TV, Playstation, DVD player and even a record player, with a large selection of films and records for you to choose from.
Outside, the grounds are at your disposal. Wander through the intricately formed gardens immediately outside the hall or try your hand at a game of tennis. A river runs through the grounds and lovely walks can be enjoyed to the local pub and beyond!
