Keswick is currently gaining a name for itself internationally as the" outdoor clothing capital" of England, due to the number of national and local specialist retailers providing clothes of all descriptions and for all weathers. Some of the famous writers of the past, including Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey, and Ruskin helped to bring the early tourists to experience the friendly town and wonderful surrounding scenery.Like many small rural towns, the heart of Keswick is its Market Place, surrounded by shops and hotels. It was recently converted into a pedestrian priority area. It may only be a small town, but Keswick nevertheless has a range of shops and services that belie its compact size. The friendly welcome from staff - many of whom are the owner managers - in the shops and the weekly markets held around the Moot Hall is genuinely reminiscent of the days gone by.
Close by are two large public parks offering games facilities in open, garden and wooded settings. They are an important part of Keswick's well tended appearance which has won it several national awards, European commendation and, very importantly, the appreciation of its multitude of visitors.
The visitor has plenty to do in and around the town. There is the choice of four museums, art and craft galleries, a cinema, and the successful Theatre by the Lake which sees productions held there throughout the year.
