Harwood Dale North Yorkshire Village

Rent self-catering holiday cottages near Harwood Dale

Harwood Dale is a very small village in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England and is located within the famous North York Moors National Park. Aside from its lovely location, it is famed for the ruins of the Chapel of St Margaret which was built in memory of Margaret, Lady Hoby of Hackness, who kept what is thought to be the oldest surviving ancient diary by a woman in English. It is a walkers’ paradise. The village itself is just a few houses, a farm and a phone box, very much village England from yesteryear, which really is one of its major charms. While you may have to visit the larger nearby towns for supplies, or slight further afield for retail and café therapy, the nearby Mill Inn opens in the evening and weekends for basic refreshments. There is also a cafe at nearby Hardwick Farm, but check opening times before setting off.

Stay locally and you can visit when it suits, cottages in Harwood Dale, Staintondale, Bickley, near Langdale End, and villages close by - walks and cycling, panoramic views and the coast not too far away.

Staying near Harwood Dale, visiting the Forest and walking the North York Moors

The Harwood Dale Forest woodland is an intriguing wood for bird watching and features roe deer, badgers, squirrels, foxes, and in season, dragonflies in the ponds and ditches. It is adored by local self-catering visitors for its total peace and tranquility, as there are no “formal” facilities attracting hordes of people, so one has to prepare a packed lunch in advance.

Depending on how you approach your walk through Harwood Dale, you will often get glimpses of the North Sea as well as views of Scarborough Castle in the distance. Be prepared for some wonderful North York Moors’ vistas, very deserved of your camera.
