Battle Abbey

Self-catering holiday cottage in Battle, Sussex.

Self-catering cottages in Sussex with history! Battle – named after the iconic history-changing 1066 (14th of October to be precise!) Battle of Hastings – with its Abbey built by penance order of the Pope of the day - is possibly one of the most famous of English Heritage sites. As well as the Abbey itself, there is the site of the battle itself, museum (housed in the Almonry which was built around 1090!) and ruins that all add up to a must-see award-wining exhibition about the Norman Conquest. Rent a unique country holiday cottage and brush up on your history, Battle is the most welcoming place to visit with beamed characterful cottages from which to explore the 1066 battlefields and the Sussex coastline.

A variety of accommodation is available close to one of the countries most iconic battlefields, sometime last-minute availability and their often pet-friendliness makes them the perfect choice!

Things to do when Visiting Battle

Battle, the town itself actually grew from the Abbey, and looking down the High Street in Battle you cannot help but notice the rather striking Abbey gatehouse. While the town itself features some distinguished Georgian buildings along the High Street, the cottages and houses nearer to the abbey date from around 1700. As well as local provisions shops, there are a few wonderful curio shops in the town that are well worth a visit, and a browse through the collectible, antiques crafts and items of interest on offer will often produce an exciting find. Keep an eye open for the country market on Friday’s during January and February and Saturdays during the rest of the year – a great place to stock up the larder of your holiday cottage! If there is a scientist within your family or group, a visit to Herstmonceux Science Centre should be made.
