With views of the South Downs and the Jack and Jill Windmills at Clayton Down Under is a perfect rural retreat set in wonderful countryside yet close to all major travel links. Offering spacious accommodation in a recently renovated farm cottage Down Under is the perfect escape in the South Downs. This splendid conversion has underfloor heating throughout and lovely character beamed ceilings which make it a warm and welcoming property. There is a well laid out open plan living space with the living area consisting of two sofas and an armchair with Freeview Television an iPod docking station and Wi-Fi provided for entertainment. There is a large dining table and a fully fitted kitchen with oven hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine provided. The cottage has everything you would need for dining in although the close by eating establishments are of very high quality should you want a break from the stove! Both bedrooms have views to the countryside at the rear of the cottage and you can catch glimpses of the windmills in the distance. The double bedroom has an en-suite walk in shower room. The second bedroom has two single beds. The family bathroom has a full bath with a shower overhead toilet and basin. The terrace is accessed through patio doors in the living area and from here you have stunning views of the South Downs and the Jack and Jill Windmills atClayton.
You can access local bridleways which will bring you to trails and pathways across the countryside and can also lead you on to the South Downs Way. Outside there is ample off road parking for up to three cars and there is an outside store which may be utilised for bicycles on request. Hassocks and beyond Down Under has fabulous views from the terrace of the Jack and Jill Windmills which overlook much of Mid-Sussex. From here you can join the Hassocks Link Trail towards Ditchling Beacon which is the third highest point along the South Downs and offers fantastic vistas both along the Downs and north across the Sussex Weald. The South Downs Way passes through the Beacon giving you the opportunity to walk both east and west along this national trail. Nestled at the foot of the South Downs Hassocks has a bustling High Street with great restaurants coffee shops and eclectic shops selling gifts clothing jewellery vintage furniture and more. There is also a monthly Farmers Market where you can sample and buy delicious local produce. The small and picturesque village of Ditchling is less than one mile to the east and has remained unspoilt over the centuries and has many examples of period Tudor buildings. The village has kept the period tradition well with classic tea rooms and an award winning 16th century pub. For sport lovers there is a beautiful 18 hole golf course at Pyecombe five minutes from Down Under.
The greens have a wonderful backdrop of the Sussex Weald and this area is also recognised as a wildlife haven. For a great day out why not visit Plumpton Racecourse just five miles away which holds National Hunt meetings from September to May each year including the prestigious Sussex Champion Hurdle? Drive thirty minutes from the cottage and you reach Brighton a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with much to offer. One of its most famous landmarks is the Royal Pavilion which is the spectacular seaside palace of the Prince Regent (George IV) and the Regency heritage of this period is much in evidence in the city. Eight miles to the east of Hassocks is Lewes which is the county town of East Sussex. The 1000 year old Norman castle is worth a visit as is the Barbican Museum opposite. Its medieval streets old English churches and tiny twittens (a Sussex word for alleyway) allow visitors a glimpse into the true essence of the bygone. Lewes also hosts numerous contemporary art galleries and special interest sites as well as bookshop boutiques and antique centres sit alongside individual craft workshops and the restaurants cafes and pubs offer delicious choices all year round with real emphasis on local produce. Both Borde Hill Gardens and Wakehurst Place are within easy reach and are well worth a visit to see their extraordinary ground
